They're present in virtually every tissue in the body—skin, gut, lungs, brain coverings, and more
When functioning properly, they help protect against germs and allergens
They release chemical mediators (like histamine, tryptase, and prostaglandins) when they detect a threat
These chemicals trigger inflammation—a normal protective response

In a healthy immune response, mast cells activate only when needed and calm down when the threat passes. Histamine, one of their main mediators, increases blood vessel permeability to allow immune cells to reach infected areas—causing the familiar redness and swelling of inflammation.

But in MCAS, these cellular security guards become overactive, releasing their chemicals inappropriately and causing symptoms throughout the body.
